Carrara Marble & Lardo of Colonnata & Pietrasanta
Explore this area made famous for its marble quarries. A guided tour of the Carrara Marble by 4x4 vehicle, takes you inside the active quarries reaching an altitude of around 1000 meters above sea level.
Moving on we will stop to sample local speciality lardo (pork lard). You will be shown a special ‘conche’ or marble basins where the lard is cured and you will be explained the preparation process of this delicacy.
Next stop is a town of colourful architecture Carrara – a must see Marble Duomo Cathedral & Museo del Marmo. Here we will have a quick break for a lunch.
In the late afternoon we drive to the lovely Pietrasanta in the foothills of the Alpi Apuane. A little town where Michelangelo used to hunt for the perfect block of marble. We will walk to Piazza Duomo and through the streets with workshops, local specialty shops, art galleries and temporary exhibitions. We will end this beautiful journey with a typical Italian aperitivo in one of the bars that face the square.
"Beautiful town, a unique square. A large city cathedral.
And, the background, the Apuan Alps.
And what a country around!”
