Tevere & Trastevere
Tevere & Trastevere
We start our tour on Ponte Sisto: the bridge which links 2 quarters - Trastevere and Campo dei Fiori. We will then walk through the colourful market stalls and stop to get some fresh fruit for a morning snack, then it’s off to Trastevere. Walking through little lanes and alleyways we will pass many lively little bars, pubs and bistros. We will visit “Roma In Trastevere Museum” which is the perfect place where to learn about life in the capital city during the 18th and 19th centuries Finally we reach Trastevere's main square, named after the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. With its magnificent 13th century mosaics, this church is believed to be one of the oldest churches in Rome. Then it is time to head back to the banks of the Tiber. Here, from the Garibaldi Bridge, we feast our eyes on the spectacular view of the boat-shaped Tiberina island. In the hot summer along the river banks you can find stalls, bars and restaurants serving refreshments and a vast array of local specialities. Walking a little further, we stop at Boccadella Verità and Circo Massimo making our way towards Testaccio and the Cestia Pyramid. Following the course of the river once more, we cut across Lungotevere Aventino so as to reach Piazza dell' Emporio, where there was once a port of the same name. The square marks the entrance to Testaccio, another of the Italian capital city's most lively districts that really comes a to life in the evenings. Here we will have a chance to see Monte Testaccio from which the district takes its name.
